Common general surgery procedures

Fibroidectomy is a surgical procedure in which fibroids, or noncancerous growths in the uterus, are removed. There are several different methods for fibroid removal, including:

  • Myomectomy: This is a surgical procedure that removes fibroids from the uterus while leaving the uterus intact. This is typically done through an open abdominal incision or with laparoscopic or robotic techniques.
  • Hysteroscopic Myomectomy: This is a procedure that is performed through the cervix, with the help of hysteroscope (a thin telescope-like instrument) and special instruments. this method is usually used when the fibroids are small and located inside the uterine cavity.
  • Uterine artery embolization (UAE): This is a minimally invasive procedure in which a catheter is inserted into the femoral artery and guided to the uterus. Tiny beads are then released through the catheter to block the blood flow to the fibroids, causing them to shrink.
  • High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU): This is a non-invasive procedure in which high-frequency sound waves are directed at the fibroids to heat and destroy them.

Recovery time and side effects may vary depending on the method used and the individual woman’s overall health. It’s important to consult with a gynecologist and a general surgeon to go over the risks, benefits and alternatives. And also note that fibroid removal may not prevent fibroids from recurring, and in some cases, a hysterectomy may be recommended to prevent recurrence.

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus is removed. There are several reasons why a hysterectomy may be performed, including:

  • Uterine fibroids, which are noncancerous growths in the uterus
  • Endometriosis, a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of it
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Uterine or cervical cancer
  • Prolapse of the uterus, a condition in which the uterus falls into the vaginal canal.

There are several different types of hysterectomy, including:

  • Total hysterectomy, which involves removal of the uterus and cervix
  • Subtotal hysterectomy, which involves removal of the uterus but not the cervix
  • Radical hysterectomy, which involves removal of the uterus, cervix, and surrounding tissue
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy, which is performed using small incisions and a camera to guide the surgery
  • Robotic hysterectomy, which is similar to laparoscopic hysterectomy but uses robotic technology to assist the surgeon.

Recovery time and side effects may vary depending on the type of hysterectomy performed, as well as the individual woman’s overall health.

It’s important to note that hysterectomy is a major surgery and also it’s irreversible and can have an impact on sexual and emotional health. so it’s recommended to explore all other options before considering a hysterectomy. And it’s also important to consult with a gynecologist and a general surgeon to go over the risks, benefits and alternatives.

Laparoscopic gynecological surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses small incisions and specialized instruments, including a laparoscope (a thin, lighted tube with a camera on the end) to perform various gynecological procedures. This technique allows the surgeon to see inside the abdomen and pelvis without making large incisions.

Examples of laparoscopic gynecological surgeries include:

  • Laparoscopic Myomectomy: This is a procedure used to remove fibroids from the uterus.
  • Laparoscopic Hysterectomy: This is a procedure used to remove the uterus, it can be a total or subtotal hysterectomy.
  • Laparoscopic Ovarian cystectomy: This is a procedure used to remove ovarian cysts.
  • Laparoscopic tubal ligation: This is a procedure used to permanently close the fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy.
  • Laparoscopic endometriosis excision: This is a procedure used to remove endometriosis tissue from the pelvic area.

The benefits of laparoscopic surgery are less pain, fewer complications, and shorter recovery times compared to traditional open surgery. And also the cosmetic results of laparoscopic surgery are usually better than traditional surgery.

It’s important to note that not all gynecological conditions can be treated with laparoscopic surgery and the decision should be made by a specialist. Also, it’s important to be aware that the benefits and risks of laparoscopic surgery should be discussed with a gynecologist prior to the procedure.

Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS) refers to a variety of surgical techniques that use small incisions and specialized instruments to perform gynecologic procedures. These techniques are designed to minimize tissue damage and reduce recovery time, pain, and scarring compared to traditional open surgery.

Examples of minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries include:

  • Laparoscopic surgery: This is the most common type of MIGS, which uses a laparoscope (a thin, lighted tube with a camera on the end) to perform various procedures through small incisions in the abdomen.
  • Hysteroscopic surgery: This is a type of MIGS that is performed through the cervix, with the help of a hysteroscope (a thin telescope-like instrument) and special instruments. Hysteroscopic surgery can be used for procedures such as fibroid removal, polyp removal, and hysteroscopic sterilization.
  • Robotic surgery: This is a type of MIGS that uses robotic technology to assist the surgeon in performing procedures such as hysterectomy, myomectomy, and ovarian cystectomy.
  • Vaginal surgery: This is a type of MIGS that is performed through the vagina, such as vaginal hysterectomy.

The benefits of MIGS include less tissue damage, smaller incisions, less pain, fewer complications, faster recovery, and better cosmetic results. However, not all gynecologic conditions can be treated with MIGS, and the decision to use MIGS should be made by a specialist after considering the patient’s specific condition and overall health. It’s important to discuss with a gynecologist the benefits and risks of MIGS prior to the procedure.
