Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon
Dr Virsen Singh is a specialist orthopaedic surgeon based on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. He is a certified orthopaedic surgeon with the HPCSA and has completed a sub-specialist fellowship (“superspecialty”) in Arthroplasty (Hip and Knee Replacement surgery). He performs Robotic-assisted Total Knee Replacement procedures.

Dr Singh completed his undergraduate Medical Degree at the University of Cape Town Medical School before proceeding to do his 2-year internship at Addington Hospital.
After working for a year at St. Andrews Hospital in the rural community of Harding, Dr Singh started as a Medical Officer in Orthopaedic Surgery at Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. During this time, he completed his primary and intermediate Orthopaedic examinations.
Dr Singh then went on to do his registrar training (residency) on the Wits University Orthopaedic Circuit, during which he spent most of his time at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (Bara). After completing his final orthopaedic examinations in 2018, Dr Singh worked as specialist consultant in the Orthopaedic Department at Bara Hospital.
In 2019, Dr Singh embarked upon a year-long sub-specialist fellowship in Arthroplasty at Baragwanath Hospital.
Dr Singh has now returned to the South Coast of KZN and commenced practice from January 2020 based at the Shelly Beach Hospital Medical Suites.
Having trained at one of the busiest trauma centers in the world, Dr Singh is highly experienced in treating orthopaedic trauma injuries.
Dr Singh performs Robotic-assisted Total Knee Replacement procedures. Although not for everyone, this modern procedure has multiple benefits in the correct patient. Dr Singh performs hip replacements through conventional approaches and minimally-invasive approaches. He is trained in the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA).
Dr Singh has completed a year-long sub-specialist fellowship in hip and knee replacement surgery. During this time he performed more than 200 joint replacement procedures completing the vast majority of procedures as the lead surgeon. He worked with internationally renowned joint replacement surgeons, published in Orthopaedic Journals and presented his original papers on local and international podiums.
During his sub-specialist fellowship, Dr Singh gained exposure to both primary and revision hip and knee joint replacement procedures. During the fellowship year, Dr Singh did more than 20 local and international visits in order to refine his skills through interaction with leaders in the field. He presented original work on podiums locally and internationally and also published in the South African Orthopaedic Journal.
As a result of his sub-specialist training, Dr Singh is able to treat hip and knee illnesses in a variety of ways. He is trained in various of approaches to the hip, including posterior approach, Hardinge approach and the more modern Direct Anterior Approach (DAA). In addition, he is able to perform the procedure through a conventional incision or a MIS (minimally invasive surgery approach). Treatment plans are individualized a detailed discussion with each patient is conducted in order to determine what approach, implant and bearing surface is best for them.
Dr Singh performs both primary and revision total knee replacement procedures. He is accustomed to using a variety of implants and always individualizes the choice of implant based of the patient’s needs.
